Jean Letherwood Cobb moved peacefully into the nearer presence of God July 28, 2012 at Bethany House in Auburn, Alabama . Memorial service will be held Friday August 3, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the Auburn United Methodist Church Founders’ Chapel. George Mathison will be officiating the service. The family will receive visitors at 10:00 AM in Hamil Court. Mrs. Cobb was born September 5, 1922 to Milburn Dewey Letherwood and Audra Glenn Letherwood in Etowah County, Alabama , where she spent her childhood. She later met her husband, Henry Clay Cobb, III while attending Auburn University. After they were married, Jean earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Jacksonville State University. Elementary students from Gadsden, Wetumpka and Jefferson County were blessed to have Mrs. Cobb as their teacher. There are many people who are able to read today because she never backed down from the challenge of teaching a child read. She firmly believed every child could learn to read and she had a passion when it came to teaching reading. When Mr. Cobb’s work took them to Florida, she became a full time home maker. After Mr. Cobb’s retirement, they came back to Alabama to be near their family. Mrs. Cobb was preceded in death by her husband, her son Lester Ray Cobb, her parents, and brothers Milburn Dewey Letherwood, Jr, Clyde Dewey Letherwood, and Charles Louis Letherwood. She is survived by her son Henry Clay Cobb, IV (Gail), daughter Anna Jean Cobb, grandchildren Lester Ray Cobb, Jr.(Katie), Henry Clay Cobb,V(Jessica), Melissa Munt Komono (Steven), Edwin Lawrence Munt, Steven Cole Cobb, and Amanda Jean Cobb, great-grandchildren Killian Hayes Munt, Rider Cobb and Taylor Cobb, her sister Ruby Letherwood O’Shields and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to Hospice Advantage EAMC, 665 Opelika Road, Auburn, Alabama 36830.
