Janice Hurd Dukes

Mrs. Dukes was born October 8, 1933 in Paragould, Arkansas. She passed away Thursday, May 24, 2012 at Arbor Springs in Opelika. She was a graduate of Paragould High School in 1951, and married Dyonius “Buck” Dukes on October 25, 1952. She graduated from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Education Degree in 1972 and received her Master’s in Education in 1988. Mrs. Dukes had been a member of the 10th Street Church of Christ for over 50 years. She taught history and economics at Opelika High School for 20 years. Jan was a devoted wife and a doting mother, who loved her church and enjoyed teaching, painting, and traveling. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elgin and Mary Baker Hurd and sister, Revalee Hurd Burton. Survivors include her husband, Dyonius “Buck” Dukes; children, S. Mark (Denise) Dukes, Julie Dukes (Kenny) Aldridge; Dr. Andrew S. (Sandra) Dukes, Sr., Carter Hurd (Susan) Dukes; and grandchildren, Laura Callie Dukes, Emma Katherine Baker, Molly Erin Baker, Cloe Madeline, Baker, Callie Aldridge Hanson, Caroline Frances Aldridge, Kenneth William Aldridge, Jr. , Hilary Kate Dukes, Andrew Scott Dukes, Jr., Carter Hurd Dukes, Jr., Marion Shook Dukes, and Callie Ryan Dukes; and her sister Luverne Hurd.

Memorial service for Janice Hurd Dukes, 78, of Dadeville, formerly of Opelika, is at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 25, 2012 at the 10th Street Church of Christ with visitation at the church one hour prior to the service. Minister Claude Flynn is officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the 10th Street Church of Christ – Romanian Mission Fund.
