Doris Helen (Wacker) Hoon

Doris Helen (Wacker) Hoon, age 73, of Opelika, Alabama, lost her battle to cancer and was taken by the angels on July 16, 2017, while at Bethany House in Auburn.  Born January 27, 1944 in Mobridge, South Dakota, she is predeceased by her parents, Edwin and Christine (Schmidt) Wacker of Mobridge, SD. 

Doris was an absolute child of God and shared her love of life through her volunteer work, gardening talents and love of flora.  She was known by many in her church for her beautiful smile and generous, kind heart.  Originally from Mobridge, SD, she married James Hoon on November 6, 1963.  In 1974, they moved to Rapid City, SD and then to Opelika, AL in 1996, following James’ retirement from the Post Office.  

Doris is survived by her husband, James Hoon; two children, Nanette Hoon Sarquiz (Mike) of Opelika, AL, and Richard Hoon (Jennie) of Marceline, MO; four grandchildren, James Sarquiz of Opelika, AL; Jessica Hoon of Orlando, FL, and Boston and Piper Hoon of Marceline, MO; sister, Myrna Wacker Jones (Paul); nieces, Jennifer Jones and Laura Jones Carter; and nephew, Michael Jones. 

A viewing for Doris will be held 9:00 a.m., Thursday, July 20, 2017 at St. Michaels Catholic Church, 1100 N. College Street, Auburn, AL, 36830 followed at 10:00 a.m. by the funeral service.  Monsignor William Skoneki will be officiating.  Interment in Garden Hills Cemetery, Opelika, will be held after the service.  Donations to Bethany House Hospice, 1171 Gatewood Drive, Auburn, AL 36830, may be made in lieu of flowers.
