Betty Jo Gray Lawrence

Betty Jo Gray Lawrence, 76 of Opelika, passed away at home January 6, 2018 in Opelika, Alabama with her family at her side.

Betty, fondly known as BJ, by family and friends, was born in Auburn to Joe Bob and Cuba Gray.  She graduated from Auburn High School in May 1959.  Betty and Donald Franklin Lawrence married June 21, 1959.  Betty enjoyed spending time with family and friends, reading, watching HGTV, going to the beach, and cheering for the Auburn Tigers.  She was an active member of FUMC Opelika where she served on several committees, one of which was Supper Club, which she organized. Another activity she enjoyed was Hot Dog Lunch Bunch, made up of friends she served with at The Soup Kitchen in Opelika.  She also enjoyed years of fellowship with her Breakfast Club, a sisterhood of friends.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, Joe Bob Gray and Albert and Cuba (Gray) Roberts; her brother, Kendrick Gray and sister, Mary Ann Cope.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 58 years, Donald Lawrence; son Joel (Jan) of Opelika; daughter Leigh Ann (Dave) Michalek of Henderson, TX; son Tommy (Heidi) of Plano, TX; grandchildren Nicole (Marc) Dube, Coby Michalek, Kacie (Will) Grinnan, Ryan, Austin, Dillon and Meghan Lawrence, Chance, Caleb and Clarke Lawrence; great-grandchildren Weston and Emerson Dube and Eli Michalek.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to FUMC Opelika (designate Missions), 702 Avenue A, Opelika, AL 36801.  The family wishes to extend their gratitude to their family and friends for their prayers and support; to the staff of Cardiac Special Care at EAMC and to Compassus Hospice Care.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 10, 2018 from 10:00-11:00 am at FUMC Opelika in the fellowship hall. Funeral service will follow at 11:00 am in the sanctuary, with Reverend Robin Wilson officiating.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Coby, Ryan, Chance, Austin, Caleb, and Dillon.  Honorary Pallbearers are the Thoroughman Sunday School Class.
