BG (Ret) Walter Hubert Grimes, 87, of Auburn, Alabama, passed away on September 16, 2018 at East Alabama Medical Center. He was surrounded by his family as he made the peaceful transition into heaven.
Walter was born in Andalusia, Alabama on December 11, 1930. He was one of ten children that lived and worked on his parent’s farm growing up. At the age of seventeen, Walter joined the Alabama National Guard and served his country faithfully both home and abroad for thirty-nine years. He retired as a Brigadier General.
Walter attended Auburn University where he earned three degrees with his capstone being a Ph.D in Entomology from the College of Agriculture. Upon graduation, he joined Mobay Chemical (now Bayer) in Kansas City and rose through the ranks to retire as the Executive Vice President of Research and Development.
Walter returned to Auburn with his loving wife, Dorothy, in 2004. They joined forces with their best friends and opened H&G Horse Quarters, an equestrian center in Auburn, AL.
Walter accepted Christ at the age of twelve and has stayed a loving servant of the Lord ever since. He has been a deacon at both Nall Avenue Baptist (Kansas City) and Lakeview Baptist Church in Auburn, AL. He also served on leadership committees for both churches. In addition, he taught adult bible study classes for a combined fifty-five years.
Walter is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Dorothy Grimes; daughter, Deborah Grimes; son, Damon Grimes; daughter-in-law, Katie Grimes; and grandchildren: Anderson (15) and Ashlyn Grimes (10); sister, Elizabeth Wise and multiple other family members.
A Memorial Service will be held at Lakeview Baptist Church on Friday, September 21, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. There will be a reception in the fellowship hall at the church immediately following the service.
