George Harmon Walker Obituary

George Harmon Walker passed away at home on March 12, 2018 in Auburn, AL at the age of 74.

George is survived by his wife, Lynn Bryan Walker; son, Bryan Walker(Carrie); daughter, Amy Walker Hutchins(Rob); grandchildren, Hayden, Addilyn, and Thomas Hutchins; sister, Janice Walker Ledford and her children, Shea Nocilo and Brad(Pam) Ballentine; brother, David Walker(Linda) and daughter, Leaha Murphy; and by numerous Bryan family whom he considered his “brothers and sisters.”  George is preceded in death by his parents, Harmon and Frances Walker; brother, Jesse Walker; and his first grandson, Hudson Walker.

George was born on February 23, 1944 in Tifton, GA to Harmon and Frances Walker. He graduated from Clay County High School in 1962, Southern Union Community College and Graduate School of Banking University of Wisconsin. George loved his country and served it with great honor and pride through the Alabama National Guard for many years.  He married Lynn Bryan in 1970.  He loved to tell the story of how he met Lynn (12 years old at the time) while delivering feed to her father’s dairy farm.  He felt God telling him he would marry that girl one day. After moving to Birmingham, George began working for SouthTrust Bank and continued working in the banking industry for years until he heard God’s call to the Alabama Sheriff’s Girls Ranch in Camphill. He, Lynn, Amy and Bryan moved to the Girls Ranch to love and care for some of the most wonderful young ladies God created.  After ministering at the ranch for seven years, the Walker’s retired and moved to Auburn.  George and Lynn opened the Oasis Christian Bookstore and loved serving the Auburn community.  After the store’s closing, George pursued a variety of activities.  One of the most treasured activities was to serve with the Carpenters for Christ of Lakeview Baptist on the mission field.  George was a wonderful man who loved God, his family and his country and will be greatly missed.  George was a member of Church of the Highlands.

George was a man of great humor.  He was known for his terrible jokes and intentional mispronunciation of words.  Many knew George as “the man with one arm.”   Many times, children would ask him where his other arm was.  He would respond, “It is in heaven waiting for me.”  We can only imagine his rejoicing when he awoke in heaven whole again.

A Celebration of Life service is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 17, 2017 at Church of the Highlands/ Auburn campus, visitation to follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate George’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lakeview Baptist Church Carpenters for Christ or Church of the Highlands Dream Center/ Auburn campus.
