Mr. James Garvin Chism, Jr., 76, of Auburn, passed away on October 18, 2018, at Bethany House. Mr. Chism was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 26, 1942, to James Garvin Chism and Bertha Shields Chism.
Mr. Chism grew up in Memphis, attending Christian Brothers High School and Christian Brothers College, graduating with his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. He married Martha Berry Chism on September 19, 1970, in Anniston, Alabama, at Grace Episcopal Church. He faithfully worked for Monsanto as a mechanical engineer for over 35 years.
Mr. Chism is survived by his wife Martha Berry Chism; their two sons: James (Deborah) Chism, III, and Gordon (Georgia) Chism. He is also survived by two grandchildren: Gideon and Grace Chism, and a brother, Everett Douglas Chism. He was a devoted father and loved to serve others in any capacity. Mr. Chism loved helping with Carpenters for Christ at Golden Springs Baptist Church in Anniston, Alabama, and looked forward to the various building projects every year. Mr. Chism always put the needs of others before himself and will be remembered for his faith and love of the Lord.
Funeral Services will be at Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home in Opelika, Alabama at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 20, 2018. Graveside services to follow at Garden Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held one our prior the funeral service. Reverend Gene Boyd officiating. In lieu of flowers, Donations may be made to Lakeview Baptist Church-Carpenter’s for Christ Auburn, Alabama.
