February 23, 1935 ~ September 17, 2018 (age 83)

Maurice Richard Byerly, 83, of Auburn, Alabama went home to his Heavenly Father on September 17, 2018. He was born on February 23, 1935 in Crystal City, TX. He attended Crystal City High School and Schreiner University in Kerrville, TX. He married Catherine Chapman and joined the US Army, where he served as a MP in Japan. Upon returning to the states, the Byerly family moved to Arlington, TX and Maurice went to work for American Can Company. He also joined the Texas National Guard. He retired from the Guard and American Can and shortly after, the love of his life, Catherine Byerly passed away. Maurice found love again and married Bobbie Hoppes. He and Bobbie moved to Auburn shortly after. They joined First Baptist Church Opelika and began serving the Lord. Maurice worked hard in all he did. He could fix or build almost anything. And he enjoyed making wood projects for his loved ones. He loved his family and his friends very much and he will be missed.

He is preceded in death by his parents: Cletus (Slim) Byerly and Ressie Johnson. His beloved first wife, Catherine Chapman Byerly and his loving second wife, Bobbie Hoppes Byerly.

He is survived by his children, Karen (Jim) Parker and Richard M. (Kathy) Byerly. Four grandchildren, James and Kevin Parker, Katrina Lyon and Justin (Vanessa) Byerly and one great-granddaughter.

A short memorial service will be held in the parlor of First Baptist Church of Opelika on Wednesday, September 26th from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at which time the family will receive friends.
