Vetra Rebecca McCullar Sherer passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home after a lengthy illness. She was born on March 1, 1923, in Jasper Alabama, and was preceded in death by: her husband, Ralph L. Sherer; parents Lonnie McCullar and Minnie Spears McCullar; brothers Darcy McCullar, Bill McCullar, and Lonnie J. McCullar; brothers-in law Neil Sherer, Sam Jones, Carl Reeves and Henry Drummond; sister-in-laws Sarah McCullar and Helen Drummond; niece Deborah Haberlin, nephew Michael (Diane) Pevsner; and great-nephew Brian Measel.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in law, Glenda Gail Sherer and Wayne Broach and grandson Kevin W. Broach. Surviving siblings include Ruth (Edsel) Thomas, Betty (James) Buford, Jean Reeves, and sister-in-law Betty (Bill) McCullar. Also surviving are in-laws Louise and Stanley A. Wade. She is survived by nieces: Diane (Michael) Pevsner, LaDonna (Barry) Brown, Betsy (Skip) Hindman, Pam (Chuck) Measel, Linda White, and Helen (Howard) Johnson; nephews Stanley (Terry) Wade Jr., John (Brenda) Wade, Hugh (Tamyra) Buford, Allen Buford, Edsel Thomas, Jr., Michael Thomas, Richard (Donna) Jones, and Russell (Kathy) Jones and many great and great-great nieces and nephews. Special friends who are a part of the Sherer extended family are Helen Funderburk, Alice Lumpkin, Hazel Lee, Carol White, Virginia Beck, and Carol Ledbetter. The family wants to express appreciation to the “angels” who provided care during her illness: Lisa Welch, Jennifer Owens, Ann Cobb, Lorene Williams, Arnita Harvey, Melissa Hughley, Rose Miles, Twanda Jones, and Compassus nurse Ashley Jacobs.
Meeting during World War II, Vetra and Ralph eloped to San Antonio, Texas where they were married in 1943. After Ralph’s return from Europe after the War, they settled in Jasper, Alabama and soon moved to Auburn to complete Ralph’s bachelor’s degree. After several moves in Alabama and Georgia, and following a year at Cornell University, they returned to Auburn in the early 1960s. Vetra was an active member of the Auburn First Baptist Church, the Auburn Woman’s Club, the Campus Club, and numerous bridge and dinner clubs.
The Celebration of Life ceremony will be held at 3:00 PM, July 21, 2018 at the Auburn First Baptist Church, with Dr. Tripp Martin officiating. The service will be followed by High Tea in the Church Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Auburn Food Bank or the charity of your choice.
