Albert Levere Beckum Obituary

Albert Levere Beckum, 81, passed away peacefully at his home in Auburn, Alabama on March 02, 2018. He was born July 29, 1936 in Augusta, Georgia to Addie Lee Lacy and Lindsey “Big Daddy” Levere Beckum. Al spent his childhood on a farm in Augusta, Georgia before attending Bolles Military Academy in Jacksonville, Florida.

Al proudly served in the US Navy on the U.S.S. Hitchiti (ATF-103) from 1954-1961.  In 1964, Al moved to Atlanta, GA and in 1967, he obtained his diploma in Optical Technology from the Macon Area Technical School. After obtaining his diploma, Al worked at the ophthalmology department at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, GA. Al moved to Auburn, AL in 1971 where he opened and operated Beckum Opticians until 2013 when he semi-retired and went to work for Whatley Eye Care in Opelika, Alabama.

Al was an avid fan of Auburn Football, and the City of Auburn. He loved to golf, fish, ski and camp. During his time in Auburn, Al served as both Cub Master for Cub Scout Pack 13 and Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 30, where he received the Silver Beaver award for distinguished service and leadership.

Al was a member of the Rotary Club, sung in a barbershop quartet, and won citizen of the year from the Civitans. Al was a member of Auburn United Methodist Church since 1973, where he was an usher, Sunday School teacher, and a member of the choir.  He was proud of his children and grandchildren and devoted to God, his family, his friends, his community, and his football team. He touched many lives in many ways. Al was small in stature but BIG in life. He will be greatly missed by all.
