Bruce Bylsma Obituary

Bruce Bylsma, age 74, of Auburn, Alabama passed away at home on January 15, 2024. Bruce was born on March 5, 1949, in Indianapolis, Indiana, and spent his youth in Arkansas before settling in Montgomery, Alabama. Bruce graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Montgomery and received a football scholarship to Auburn University, where he lettered three years playing defensive end under Coach Shug Jordan from 1968-71. He married Patricia Worthington on March 5, 1968, and together they raised three rambunctious boys. Their lives were filled with many adventures in sports, camping, rafting, and boating. And you could always depend on Bruce’s volunteer spirit as shown in the many years he coached and umpired youth sports.

He worked as the safety director at Ampex Corporation in Opelika, Alabama for twenty-five years. Following his time at Ampex, he represented several companies as a loss control consultant. After retiring, he became a driver for Tiger Transit. Bruce’s passions included spending time with his family and friends, supporting Auburn Tigers athletics, and enjoying Lake Martin. He and his wife, Pat, also enjoyed volunteering at Church of the Highlands and were on the baptismal team for several years. He will also be very much missed by his faithful companions, his miniature schnauzers, Brandy, Spanky, and Star.

Bruce is preceded in death by his parents James Bylsma and Phoebe Bylsma Hillsamer. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-five years, Patricia Worthington Bylsma and his children, Mark Wade Bylsma (Donna), David Wayne Bylsma (Lori), and Steven Wyatt Bylsma (Kelly). He is also survived by his siblings, James Bylsma (Dee), Christopher Bylsma (Annette), Kathy Branch (Steve), and Suzanne Burns (Gerald). He and Pat have twelve grandchildren, Seth, Madison, Alyssa, Hayley, Emily, Chandler, Jackson, Matthew, Austin, Zachary, Kenzie, and Kole along with twelve great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM CT on Friday, January 19, 2024, at Church of the Highlands East Campus with visitation following. Flowers can be sent directly to the church or donations can be made to the American Heart Association in Bruce’s name at https://www.heart.org.
