Obituary

A memorial service for Dr. Mary Eugenia Malone Zallen of Auburn will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, June 26, 2022 in the Chapel of the Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home in Opelika.

Dr. Eugenia Malone Zallen, who died April 21, 2022, at her residence, was born July 18, 1932, in Camp Hill, Alabama, the daughter of the late Benjamin Floyd Malone and Pauline Phillips Kelly Malone, both originally from Monticello, Georgia.  She graduated from the Camp Hill High School and received her Bachelor of Science from Auburn University in 1953. She completed her dietetic internship at Duke University Medical Center and subsequently practiced at Duke University Medical Center and Emory University Hospital. She later attended Purdue University, where she received a Master of Science in 1960, and the University of Tennessee, where she attained a Doctor of Philosophy in food science in 1974.

Dr. Zallen served on the faculties of Auburn University, the University of Maryland, and the University of Oklahoma, retiring as the Dean of the College of Consumer Science at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina.  She was active in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetics Association) throughout her career and served as president of the Home Economists in Home and Community in Auburn.  Dr. Zallen was also a founding member of the Auburn University Women's Philanthropy Board, as well as a member of the Auburn University Dietetics program advisory council.  Dr. Zallen was also a dedicated member of both the Retired Faculty Early Morning Swimmers Group and the Friday Morning Bible Study, both in Auburn.

Dr. Zallen received many honors and awards over the course of her life, including being named one of the Outstanding Alumni of the College of Human Science at Auburn University and she was recognized as a Distinguished Woman Graduate at 100 years of Women at Auburn.  She also received a Gold Achievement Lifetime Achievement Award and "Old Master' Award from Purdue University.  She was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Society of Sigma Xi, and Kappa Omicron Nu honor societies, as well as Zeta Tau Alpha sorority.

Dr. Zallen was preceded in death by her two brothers, Benjamin Floyd and Eli Thomas Malone.  She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Dr. Harold Zallen of Auburn; two nieces Phyllis Malone Mayfield of Woodstock, Georgia and Katherine Eugenia Malone-France of Washington, DC; and her sister-in-law Sylvia Strickland Malone of Auburn.
