George was born in Hartford, Connecticut, to George and Stella Kozlowski. He grew up in Hartford and then attended Wesleyan University (Middletown, CT) as a scholarship student. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa with distinction in mathematics and was named a National Science Foundation Fellow for graduate study at the University of Michigan. After earning his PhD there, he did two years of post-graduate research with Dr. Marston Morse at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.
George's academic career included teaching and research at the University of Washington, where he also enjoyed hiking and mountain climbing. His great passions, however, were conducting research in topology, working with his colleagues in mathematics at Auburn University, and sharing his knowledge with graduate students. He continued his interest in mathematics after retiring in 2007 and was actively collaborating with others in his field when he died.
George married Yvonne Bessette, his wife for 59 years, his senior year at Wesleyan. They had been friends since high school and both shared a love of learning. Besides Yvonne, he leaves his two daughters, Pam Kozlowski and Lisa Marie Kozlowski.
George was a wonderful husband, father, and friend and will be sorely missed.
