John "Johnny" Meagher, Jr. Obituary

John “Johnny” Francis Meagher, Jr., devoted father, grandfather, and Auburn fan, died peacefully on June 15th, 2022 in Auburn, Alabama at the age of 95. Johnny was born May 6th, 1927, in Austin, Texas and was the son of the late John Francis “Jack” and Frances Conrey Meagher. He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Nearing Meagher, siblings Bill Meagher, Marilyn Perry, Richard “Dick” Meagher, Michael “Mickey” Meagher, and Patrick Conrey “Pat” Meagher.

He is survived by his children, John Meagher III, Tom (Teddi) Meagher, and Cecilia (Dan) Rusell. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Mallory (Reagan) Drake, Thomas Patrick Meagher, Jr., Malcolm Lawrence Russell, II, and Daniel Graham Russell.

Johnny grew up in Auburn, Alabama and graduated from Auburn High School at the age of 16. He enrolled in The Alabama Polytechnic Institute for one year before enlisting and faithfully serving in the United States Marine Corps. After his honorable discharge in 1945, Johnny completed his education at API where he graduated in civil engineering on August 27th, 1949. While at API, Johnny was a basketball letterman and member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. Johnny dedicated his career to working at Hardaway Contracting Company in Columbus. He started in 1949 as a field engineer, working his way up to project engineer and eventually project manager. Johnny served the company as Vice President of the Heavy Civil/Marine Division and eventually company President. He was highly respected within the engineering community and completed many unique projects such as the West Point Hydroelectric Power Plant in 1972 and Wallace Dam in Eatonton, Georgia in 1975.

In 1962, Johnny met the former Agnes Eloise Nearing of Spuds, Florida at his brother’s wedding in Bainbridge, Georgia. The two married on August 3rd, 1963 and were married for 38 years before Agnes’ death on August 24th 2001. Johnny had a servant's heart as he volunteered with St. Michael’s church for several mission trips to Haiti where he used his engineering skills to assist with building repairs. He faithfully and regularly sorted donations and boxed food items for members of his community through the Auburn Food Bank with the Marine Corps League.

Johnny was a devout member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and the Rotary Club of Auburn. He enjoyed all things Auburn University and continually represented the values of the Auburn Creed, and has instilled a love for Auburn in his family legacy. His surviving family hopes those reading will live by his mantra: “Be good every chance you get.”
