Ram Chandra Purohit

Ram Chandra Purohit 83, died on June 5th, 2022 in Auburn, Alabama. He was born on December 15th, 1938 in Rajasthan, India. Doctor Purohit joined the faculty at Auburn University as an instructor in 1973, and was promoted to assistant professor in 1974. He was promoted to full professor in 1983. Dr. Purohit earned his BVSc and AH degree from The University of Rajasthan, India in 1962. He did post-graduate work at Washington State University from 1966-1968 in reproductive physiology. Ram completed a PhD at Auburn University in 1974 and a Master’s of Science at Tuskegee University in 1996. He became board certified by the American College of Theriogenology in 1980. In 2001, he was awarded specialty board certification by the American Board of Thermology and the American Academy of Thermology. Dr. Purohit was awarded Distinguished Graduate Faculty Lectureship by Auburn University for 1994 through 1995.

A majority of Dr. Purohit’s instruction was in large animal clinical rotations focusing on anesthesia of horses and food animals. His teaching interests included anesthesia intensive care, pharmacology, thermography, and cardiovascular physiology. His research interests included thermal imaging, neurovascular thermography, and Thermology of skin dermatomes. Dr. Purohit served on 34 MS committees and 7 PhD committees throughout his career. He also served as Alumni Professor from 1995 until 2000. Ram had 179 journal publications and four book chapters to his credit. He also gave 112 scientific presentations during his career. He served Auburn University well for 32 years as a teacher, clinician, researcher, and ambassador at the national and international level. His expertise was sought by organizations around the world and the permanent faculty of the school of veterinary medicine awarded him Professor Emeritus at the end of his career. He was well known and well-remembered by graduate and professional students alike.

Ram was predeceased by this father Shankar Lal Purohit, mother, Durga Purohit, stepmother Bhanwari Purohit and grandfather Sultan Singh Purohit. He is survived by his wife Cynthia Purohit (married 40 years), daughter Kailash Purohit (Dinesh), sons Joshua Purohit (Kayla), and Manish Purohit (Varsha), sisters Sita Purohit and Sohan Purohit. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Divya Purohit (Samir), Abhishek Purohit, Megha Purohit (Matt), Amolika Purohit, Tarun Purohit, Anmol Purohit, Julian Purohit, and great grandchildren; Sahana, Niem, and Ojas Purohit.
