Robert Lopez Perez, a devoted veteran of the United States Army, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2025, in Auburn, Alabama, at the age of 85. He is remembered by family, friends, and fellow service members for his unwavering dedication, courage, and strength that he demonstrated throughout his life.
Born on March 29, 1940, in Havana, Cuba, Robert immigrated to the United States in 1958.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1965, answering the call to serve during a tumultuous period in history. He completed a one-year tour in Vietnam where he displayed exceptional bravery and earned several commendations.
In 1968, he married his beloved wife, Amelia Svidergol Perez, who was serving in the Army Nurse Corps. Their military service took them to Vietnam, several countries overseas, and many U.S. Army installations. Following his honorable discharge in 1974 at the rank of Staff Sergeant, he pursued a career in law enforcement and corrections. It was during this time that he became interested in restoring antique cars. This became a hobby that he thoroughly enjoyed for many years. His post-service years were also marked by his passion for raising a family and mentoring young people. He not only shared his military experiences but also the principles of integrity, perseverance, and respect.
Robert is survived by his wife of 57 years, Amelia, and his children Amy Horak (Rick) and David Perez (Mary Anne). He also has 13 grandchildren, Christian, Anna Kate, John Miles, Luke, Amelia Horak, Emily, Annabelle, Noah, Adaline, Levi, Isaac, Jacob, and Lucy Perez. He is also survived by his sister, Gloria Lopez Hicks, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Lopez-Casuso and Marta Perez-Ruiz.
A funeral mass to honor Robert’s life and military service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Auburn, AL. The mass will be officiated by Reverend Monsignor Michael Farmer. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. The burial will follow the service at Town Creek Cemetery with military honors. A reception will then follow at the church. Donations may be made to
St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church building fund and veteran charities, commemorating Robert’s enduring faith and commitment to those who served alongside him.
Robert’s life embodied the values of love, loyalty, and family. He will be deeply missed. He will be remembered for his service to his country, and also for the countless lives he touched with his love, kindness, and spirit. His legacy will continue through his family that he cherished.
