Ruth Wright died on February 11, 2018, after a brief stay in the East Alabama Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert Lehmann and Ruth Murphy Lehman. Also, by her husband Thomas Lundy Wright, Ph.D.
Mrs. Wright was born in 1933 and was raised in LaGrange, GA. She graduated from high school there and from LaGrange College, where she was a member of the Honors Club and recognized by "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities".
She received her Master's Degree from Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama and continued her graduate studies at the University of Virginia. She attended the University of London Summer School in 1959 and the Chicago Institute in 1983.
Mrs. Wright was a graduate teaching assistant from 1955 to 1960 at Auburn University. She returned to Auburn’s English Department in 1965 where she taught Advanced Composition, Honors Freshman Composition and Sophomore Literature. She served on many department committees and was a tenured professor until her retirement. She was a consultant to McGraw-Hill publishing Company for three composition texts.
Mrs. Wright was a member of many professional organizations during her teaching career. After her retirement she became very active in The League of Women Voters of East Alabama and The League of Women Voters of Alabama.
She is survived by her husband's sister and her husband, Dr. and Mrs. James R Drake and nephew, Robert Drake of Chattanooga TN; her niece and her husband, Mr. And Mrs. J Phillip Crone of Suwannee, GA; two great nieces, Bailey Crone and Rachel Crone; and many close first cousins.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at two o'clock in the Founder’s Chapel of the Auburn United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to LaGrange College Art Program, 601 Broad Street, LaGrange, GA 30240-2999, Auburn University English Department, or the charity of your choice.
