William Andrew (Andy) Speir, age 65, became a Free Bird on Wednesday, December 23,2020 when he peacefully passed away due to natural causes following a series of illnesses. All of you reading this who called him friend, brother or Dad know for sure that you, we, all of us are horse’s asses. He is preceded in death by his father H.E. (Buster) Speir, Sr., one of his best friends, Bill Florence, and his niece, Jill, known to him as a little rascal and a little crab.
Andy was a well-loved father and friend to Will Speir, brother to Buster Speir, Jr and to Jeanne Hamilton. He was an uncle to Aimee, Mindee, Mike, Erin, Ryan, Richard, Russell, and Patrick. He also leaves behind great nephews and nieces who are better for having him as an uncle. Andy was a friend to anyone who had time for a laugh or to share a beer. He also loved to hang out with Mr. Paul by the pond watching the ducks. He was generous with what he had and always willing to share your beer with you.
In his working life, Andy’s first job was at Tyler’s Restaurant on 2nd Avenue, followed by a stint at the US Post Office, followed by Speir Auto Parts. He moved on from selling auto parts to selling office supplies at Loy’s in Lanett, and later he became a real estate agent, just in time for the collapse of the housing market.
He loved music, archery, playing pranks, making people laugh, most of his family, and of course, his son, Will. In his high school years, he played trumpet and for a time served as First Chair in the Opelika High School Band, during which time he received the John Phillips Susa Award for outstanding leadership and musical ability. Later in his adult, life Andy became a world class archer, winning several State and National championships in barebow competitions all over the country. In 1993 he won State, National and World Championships. Of these accomplishments, his son Will was and always will be his greatest source of pride.
A private service for Andy is being planned.
